| Home invasions combine the most frightening elements of property crimes and violent crimes. Offenders come into a home space - a safety zone - and make it into something completely unthinkable and unrecognizable for its occupants.
The Pocono Record reports that two men are on the run after an attempted home invasion in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County. One resident of the home was injured by gunfire during the attempt. His condition remains unknown at this time.
I extend my sympathy to the family victimized by this crime and hope that the injured young man recovers quickly and thoroughly. In the meantime, police are going to be looking diligently for the people responsible for the attack.

| Old Forge Gunman Arrested |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| The
Times-Tribune reports that Old Forge schools were shut down and several local roads closed this afternoon while police worked to apprehend an alleged gunman roaming in and out of the woods in a residential and business neighborhood near West Oak Street Cemetery.
Thank goodness, Old Forge pizza production appears to have remained unaffected.
In all seriousness, a man with a gun trying to escape police capture in a neighborhood where people are living and working, possibly unaware of the danger, is no laughing matter. This man is going to have a lot of explaining to do. He should not hesitate at all before contacting an
Old Forge criminal defense lawyer.
If you are facing Old Forge weapons charges or any kind of criminal charges in NEPA or the Poconos, then you should immediately contact an
Old Forge criminal defense attorney at Rogan Law. The initial consultation is free, and we can help you to really understand and make good choices about your legal options.

| Thoughts from a Pocono Criminal Defense Lawyer |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| In the 1960s, Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted experiments aimed at measuring everyday people's willingness to perform violent acts against others when told to do so by an authority figure. You may remember the results from psychology class: 65% of participants, obeying the authority figure's orders, inflicted maximum levels of pain on the experimental subject.
Of course, the "subject" was an actor and was never harmed. The participants told to inflict the pain were the real subjects, and their behavior generated a national discussion about obedience, conscience and human conformity.
I bring this up because, as a criminal defense lawyer, I regularly deal with people accused of having made criminal choices. Sometimes my clients are innocent of all wrongdoing; other times, they admit to having done wrong, but want to explain how or why they ended up doing what they did.
How conditions shape our choices remains the object of scientific inquiry, but since the Milgram experiments, we know that most people, under certain conditions, are capable of criminal behavior. An uncomfortable truth, maybe, but a truth nonetheless.
That is why when I look at the case, for example, of the Newfoundland man who recently pled guilty to helping an alleged killer flee, I try to reserve judgment. The man says he didn't know about the crimes at the beginning, and that when he found out he was too scared to stop. Is this the truth? Either way, he deserves to be heard and defended by a competent Pocono criminal defense lawyer.

| Dickson City Armed Robbery |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| The Times-Tribune reports that three people - two men and a woman - robbed a Turkey Hill in Dickson City at gunpoint this past Monday.
Armed robbery is defined as the use or threat of use of a deadly weapon during a robbery. In the state of Pennsylvania, if you are accused of this crime, then you will receive an automatic felony charge, an extremely serious matter that can result in significant time behind bars.
Depending on the circumstances of their case, once arrested and convicted, the Dickson City armed robbery suspects mentioned above could spend many, many years in prison.
No one should leave their freedom and future to chance. A Dickson City armed robbery attorney from Rogan Law will meet with you for a free case consultation and discuss your options with you. We can then begin investigating your case immediately in the effort to find evidence supporting you and your best interests. It will be your Dickson City armed robbery attorney's ultimate goal to have your charges lowered or dismissed completely.

| Economics, Education and Crime in Northeast Pennsylvania |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
Today's Times-Tribune reports that at least ten preschools in Lackawanna, Wayne and Susquehanna counties have either remained closed or are on the verge of closing due to the state budget impasse.
The article also discusses new research which suggests that kids who attend preschool are only half as likely to wind up in prison as kids who do not.
The article then segues back to economics, with the Scranton Police Chief pointing out that, "It costs more today to have somebody in state prison than it costs to send someone to college at Penn State University for one year."
What struck me about this article was the seamlessness of the transition among the three topics: economics, education, crime.
If research showed that preschool made no difference - or worse yet - that former preschoolers inordinately comprised the prison population, then would we value education less? Does education have no inherent value?
Similarly, if the financial cost of imprisoning our young people remained less than the cost of college, then would we be happy to keep sending them to prison?
I fear we are becoming a culture in which the majority would say that education is only as important as the income it generates, and that the value of everything - even freedom - can be measured in dollars and cents.
That, to me, is as scary as the scariest crime statistic out there.
Keeping people who should not be in prison out of prison is a big part of my job. It means something - something more than money - to the people I serve. Check out some of my client testimonials to see what I mean.

| ESU Rape Charges Untrue |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| The Pocono Record reports today that a young woman who claimed to have been raped at knifepoint at East Stroudsburg University (ESU) now admits she made up the incident to call attention away from her real problems.
This is the second time since July that Monroe County police have investigated what turned out to be a false rape report.
In both the ESU case and the earlier case, police, fortunately, did not apprehend suspects who fit the descriptions given by the young women. Had they done so, two innocent young men's lives would have changed forever - all because of lies.
Rape remains a serious, widespread and dangerous problem. Experts from the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) estimate that 1 in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Victims report elevated rates of depression, post-traumatic stress disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and suicidal impulses. If you or someone you know has survived a rape or a sexual assault and need help, then you may anonymously and confidentially contact a trained counselor by calling 1-800-656-HOPE.
But the fact remains that not every rape allegation turns out to be true - and not everyone who makes a false claim has the decency to retract it. Rape cases often come down to one person's word against another's, and in these cases it is especially important to investigate whether the alleged victim might be making a false claim.
If you are charged with rape in Monroe County, then you need a Stroudsburg sex crime lawyer who will work hard to find any evidence that may help your case and who will do everything he can to expose instances of false allegations so that your reputation and freedom are not placed at risk.

| Local Gang Members Charged with Criminal Homicide in Lackawanna County |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| The Times-Tribune reports that police have arrested three members of the Bloods street gang, including two West Scranton High School students, on criminal homicide charges. The three young men - ages 17, 18 and 25 - were sent to Lackawanna County Prison without bail.
West Scranton High School's website states that the school "is a microcosm of the community it serves." This likely is true - and the fact that at least two of its students have become involved with an organization as violent as the Bloods says a great deal about the serious problems facing our cities and schools.
Last spring, the Times-Tribune reported that Scranton officials finally admitted, after years of denial, that gangs were operating in the city. Since 2005, nearly 400 likely or confirmed gang members have entered Lackawanna County Prison; at any time, 8% to 12% of the county's 900 inmates are suspected or confirmed gang members.
Though many local people blame the emergence of gangs on an influx of people from Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey, we must also admit that young people born and bred in our area are becoming involved with gangs and we must ask how we may begin turning things around.
Prevention is key, since once a person becomes involved with a gang and its criminal activities, he or she puts their whole future at risk.
A competent and knowledgeable Scranton criminal defense lawyer can help someone who has been caught up in the criminal justice system because of his or her gang affiliation get back on track.
If you have been charged with a gang-related crime in Lackawanna County, then you need a Scranton criminal defense attorney who can defend your rights and your freedom. If you need help, then you should contact Rogan Law today. |

| Stroudsburg, Monroe County Appeal |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
Some news broke recently regarding a potential Stroudsburg, Monroe County appeal.
Last Friday, I learned that a Monroe County jury had convicted Hugo Selenski of robbery and kidnapping. The case was major news, as Selenski had already been tried and found not guilty in other well-publicized cases, including two murders and a jail escape. Selenski still faces charges in Luzerne County for a double murder.
WBRE reported that Selenski's attorney plans to appeal the conviction, claiming that allowing evidence from the upcoming Luzerne County murder trial in the Monroe County trial was unconstitutional.
Whether Selenski's appeal will be successful remains to be seen. His case will be reviewed by a higher court, which could reverse the guilty verdict or even grant an entirely new trial.
During an appeal, many aspects of an original trial may be challenged, including misconduct on the part of the prosecutor, judicial errors, and ineffective assistance of your original attorney. But appeals must be files promptly - you only have a certain window of time within which to act.
Don't waste time. Contact a Stroudsburg criminal defense lawyer who can handle the complex proceedings an appeal requires. Rogan Law will aggressively seek relief through appeals whenever a reversal or retrial is possible. We will make it our number one goal to obtain a different outcome for your case.
Let us handle your Stroudsburg, Monroe County appeal. Contact Rogan Law today. |

| Hazleton, Luzerne County, Immigration Crime |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
Need help with Hazleton, Luzerne County, immigration crime charges? If so, then you are not alone.
In 2006, Hazleton made national news when it passed its Illegal Immigration Relief Act, a law that discouraged hiring and renting to undocumented immigrants. In Hazleton, this mostly meant Latinos; the law had a chilling impact on the Latino community, including its many members who are American citizens.
Support for the act was based partly on the city mayor's claim that murders and violent crimes had increased dramatically as a result of illegal immigration to the city.
However, evidence suggested that this claim was untrue. In fact, studies show that undocumented immigrants have extremely low incarceration rates, and that very few serious crimes committed in Hazleton were attributable to undocumented immigrants.
In 2007, a federal judge struck down the Illegal Immigration Relief Act. An appeal filed with a federal appeals court last fall is still awaiting a ruling. Latino residents throughout the region remain fearful for their safety and worried about the futures of their jobs, homes and businesses.
In the meantime, people charged with Hazleton, Luzerne County, immigration crimes continue to need effective legal representation - immigration offenses remain extremely common in the United States and throughout Pennsylvania.
If you or a loved one has been charged with an immigration offense in Luzerne County or anywhere throughout northeast PA or the Poconos, then you need to take immediate action to protect your rights and your future. A Luzerne County criminal defense lawyer from Rogan Law will take the proper actions on your behalf to improve your chances of successfully resolving your immigration charges.

| Monroe County Weapons Charges |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| This past June, two students from the Monroe County Pleasant Valley School District were accused of weapons charges.
An 18-year-old student was accused of bringing a .38-caliber handgun to the high school and leaving it in a parked car.
During a metal detector search, a 15-year-old student was allegedly found with a 7.5 inch knife.
Though neither student committed an act of violence or even of threatened violence, both face serious criminal weapons charges, in addition to school expulsions under Act 26, which prohibits PA students from bringing weapons onto school property and requires administrators to notify law enforcement and to expel the offender, in most cases.
What should you do if you or someone you know is being investigated for a weapons offense or gun violation in Monroe County or elsewhere in northeast PA or the Poconos? Find representation from an experienced criminal defense lawyer right away. Contact a Monroe County criminal defense attorney at Rogan Law.
In order to build an effective defense strategy for your case, your lawyer will need adequate time to prepare. The sooner you consult with an attorney at our firm the better off your case will be. The longer your lawyer has to find information and gather evidence, the greater the odds that he or she will be able to find a defense to your weapons charges, which is why you should act immediately.

| Charged with Violent Crimes in Monroe County |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| It is not uncommon for people to be charged with violent crimes in Monroe County. But what causes some people to become violent while others never do?
Following the recent, shocking mass murder at a Binghamton, NY immigrant center, the Pocono Record published and article about what triggers such killing sprees. Experts who were interviewed said mass murderers generally share certain characteristics:
- They experience a major event that makes them both suicidal and vengeful;
- They usually are middle-aged white males - men commit 93% of violent crimes;
- They usually are angry at a person, group or place and target the people or places they blame for their anger (though some do kill randomly);
- They usually have no criminal record; and
- They usually have no record of psychiatric treatment.
But, when you read these characteristics, you still have to wonder why, because so many people fit this profile and yet never commit a violent crime.
Once a person commits a violent crime, he (or she) cannot change what he has done, no matter how much he may want to. And if a person is charged with committing a violent crime, then he probably feels frightened and nervous about his future.
Frankly, he should. Persons convicted of violent crimes may face harsh penalties that impact their freedom as well as their future ability to obtain employment, loans, housing, etc. In order to have the best chance of overcoming violent charges, the accused person needs an experienced attorney to provide him with unyielding legal support.
If you are facing charges for violent crimes in Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, Delaware Water Gap, Mount Pocono or anywhere in Monroe County or throughout Northeast PA and the Poconos, then contact Rogan Law and speak with a Monroe County criminal defense lawyer who will work hard to gather the necessary information and evidence to have your violent charges reduced or dismissed.

| Stroud Township, Monroe County Criminal Conspiracy |
| Posted By Patrick M. Rogan |
|
| Police are looking for a second suspect in a Stroud Township, Monroe County, criminal conspiracy.
This past Sunday, the Pocono Record reported that police had arrested one Stroud Township man for allegedly trying to rob a woman and then, shortly after, robbing another. The man, who was placed in Monroe County Correctional Facility, was charged with robbery, theft, reckless endangerment, criminal attempt and criminal conspiracy - police seek information about a second suspect in both cases.
You might remember from earlier blogs that a person may be convicted of criminal conspiracy even if only one overt act is carried out by a single member of the conspiracy, as long as prosecutors can demonstrate an agreement, in words or actions, to commit an offense, willing participation by the defendant and an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.
If you are suspected of criminal conspiracy or charged with criminal conspiracy in Monroe County or anywhere throughout northeast PA or the Pocono Mountain region, then you will need an experienced Monroe County criminal defense attorney to handle your case effectively.
Don't wait another minute if you face criminal conspiracy charges in Monroe County. Contact Rogan Law today to talk with a criminal defense lawyer who knows how to defend against conspiracy charges. |
